9to5Google He revealed the first tangible details of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, including the names of the hardware codes, the Tensor chip used, and their Samsung modem.
Last year, we shared that Google was already They are working hard on the second generation From the Tensor GS101 processor powering the Pixel 6 series – and upcoming Pixel 6 A And pixel notepad devices. At the time, we were able to find the processor’s model number, GS201, and associate it with a code name, “Cloudripper”, which we believe is only a test board for developers internally.
After the release of Android 13 Developer Preview, we found more information about what Google is keeping for 2022. For starters, the trusted source and friend of the site Stark 27 Spotted that the GS201 chip will contain a Samsung modem – currently unreleased – with the model number “g5300b”. For comparison, the Pixel 6 lists its modem as “g5123b”, which is a file Exynos 5123 . modem. Looking at the model number, we think Google’s second-generation Tensor chip will feature the Exynos Modem 5300, details of which have not been announced.
Besides the Cloudripper in the code, there are also three additional device codenames associated with the Exynos 5300 modem. The two we’ll focus on first are “Cheetah” and “Panther.” 9to5Google I learned that these two secret names are associated with the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro phones are likely to be released in the fall. Since these devices have been indicated to have the same modem as the Cloudripper, we are now more confident that the Pixel 7 series will be powered by the second generation Google Tensor GS201 chip.
An interesting aside, leopard and leopard are distinctly feline code names. All Pixel and Nexus phones released prior to the Pixel 6 series were given codenames related to fish or other marine life. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro took a different path, using the codenames “Oriole” and “Raven” respectively. This bird naming is set to continue with the Pixel 6a “Bluejay” and the Pixel Notepad “Pipit”. It’s too early to say with any certainty, but it looks like Google is now working on changing the codename scheme for Pixel devices based on generations, with the 2022-2023 season giving cat-like codenames.
The third code name for the pixels attached to the Exynos 5300 modem is “Ravenclaw”. At first glance, this may seem like a simple nod to Hogwarts, but we think there are quite a few nuances to that.
We previously reported that while the first Google Tensor chip was in development — long before the Pixel 6 design was finalized — Google tested the chip internally by replacing the Snapdragon 765 in Pixel 5 units with a Tensor processor. This synthesizer has been internally referred to as “Whitefin” – a Portmanto code name taken from “White” from the Tensor Project “Whitechapel” and “fin” from the Pixel 5’s “Red Fin”. We think the Ravenclaw is a similar blend, taking the body of The Pixel 6 Pro – aka Raven – adds the GS201 chip, with “claw” being a nod to the Pixel 7 generation cats.
For now, there aren’t any other specifications or details to share about the Pixel 7 or the Pixel 7 Pro, but we’ll be watching closely over the coming months.
