Lizzo drops new version of ‘Grrrls’ after Ableist lyrical reaction

Lizo She released a new version of her single “Grrrls” after receiving backlash from disability advocates for the inclusion of the word “spaz” in the song’s opening lines.

The original version of the track sparked a heated debate among fans, who were disappointed with the singer’s decision to include the offensive term. In the medical field, “spastic” refers to a disability that makes it difficult for people to control their muscles, especially in their arms and legs.

Lizzo responded on Instagram, posting the song’s replacement announcement and explaining her decision to release a new version of the song. “Let’s make one thing clear: I never want to promote offensive language,” she wrote, before detailing how “proud” she was to take the steps to “listen and take action.”

In the original song, Lizzo sang: “Hold my bag, bitch, grab my bag / Do you see that shit? I’m a spazz.” The new version now features Lizzo singing: “Hold my bag, bitch, hold my bag / Do you see that shit? Ban.” Listen to the updated track below.

Grrrls’ release follows Lizzo’s favorite TikTok fandom “About Damn Time” and is the second single from the pop singer’s upcoming studio album “Special.” The new project is scheduled to arrive on July 15 via Nice Life Recording Company/Atlantic Records.
