Coffee and Focus: What Link Is There?

The existence of a relationship between coffee and focus is now recognized by science, but it is a good idea not to overdo it in order to avoid negative effects from a health point of view. But how does the Dark Grail affect our brain functions? Let’s find out together.

Does coffee increase focus?

While the stimulating effects of coffee are well known to everyone, it is worth considering the consequences that consuming this drink can have on cognitive abilities. It’s not fake news, but it’s an established fact that a cup of coffee helps increase focus; Or, to be precise, it makes the human brain process the information it receives 10% faster than usual.

To be able to improve focus and raise one’s attention threshold, the dose of caffeine that must be introduced into the body, according to data provided by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), is equal to 75 milligrams, which is approximately the caffeine content of a cup.

Research dating back to 2010 wanted to compare regular coffee consumers and non-habitual consumers in order to investigate the effects of caffeine in relation to the attention threshold of both groups. As expected, depending on the doses, variable effects were found: for the average consumer, in fact, at least 4 cups of coffee are needed to improve attention, while in the unfamiliar consumer 2 cups are caffeine

Effects of caffeine on the nervous system

In addition to the ability to concentrate, caffeine also affects other aspects of the nervous system: it affects, for example, the ability to pay attention in conditions in which it tends to decrease. This is true not only when you feel sleepy because you are tired or when you feel the usual numbness you feel after lunch, but also if you have flu symptoms.

Consuming about 200 milligrams of caffeine per day (through our beloved cup of course but also through cola or chocolate-based drinks) allows us to fight brain decay while promoting improved cognitive functions.

Some research has also focused on the relationship between coffee consumption and memory skills: also in this case the positive effect of two cups of coffee per day has been demonstrated, but it is important to highlight the need not to overdo it. Because excessive stimulation risks promoting job deterioration, rather than improving it.

The effects also seem to be more relevant among people with a highly extroverted personality.
