The imprisoned politician has been transferred to a maximum security prison in Melikhovo in the Vladimir region, according to Russian state media TASS citing Sergei Yazan, head of the regional public oversight committee.
Yazan told TASS on Tuesday that Navalny had arrived in prison. However, Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarimsh said on Twitter that despite media reports, Navalny’s team had not received confirmation of his transfer to Melikhovo.
Lyudmila Romanova, the commissioner for human rights in the Vladimir region, told TASS on Tuesday that the prison has a good reputation.
He was indicted by the Lefortovo Court in Moscow on fraud charges over allegations that he stole from his anti-corruption foundation.
Earlier Tuesday, Navalny’s legal team said they did not know the whereabouts of the outspoken Kremlin critic.
He added, “He was transferred to a maximum security prison, according to his sentence.” [in the new criminal case] His lawyer, Olga Mikhailova, told CNN: “We have it in place but we don’t know which one. Exactly where it is, is unknown to us.”

According to Yarmesh, Navalny’s lawyers came to the penal colony to meet him and were informed that he was not there.
